Pergola Restoration
RESTORATION HIGHLIGHT – Pergola, 2017
The covered walkway leading from the Castle’s driveway to the lakeside lawn, known as the pergola, was in very poor condition before it was restored in 2017. Wood rot was wreaking havoc on the posts, beams, braces, and decorative rafter tails. Preservation carpenters from Fifield Building Restoration & Relocation replaced only what was absolutely necessary, with the goal of keeping as much of the original wood intact as possible. In some cases, they spliced new white oak members with original sections using special joinery techniques. All exposed surfaces were chiseled to resemble the original scalloping, and new copper flashing was attached to the tops of the rafter tails.
